Blazer Chief II Cigar Lighter with Snap-In Cigar Cutter – Black

I bought this lighter as a replacement to my “cheapo” lighter that just has way too many issues igniting. I’ve been using it for a few weeks now and I have to say, I’m extremely pleased with it! It ignites virtually every time with a very smooth slide action and holds a beautiful strong single flame. I thought the cutter would just be a novelty add-on, but I’ve found it to be a very effective cutter! It’s very sharp and makes a nice clean cut. Another thing I really love about this lighter is the visible fuel gauge that is found behind the cutter. I would definitely recommend this item to anyone in the market. Great price and a great product!

As I was going to hike in the Andes and I wanted a strong lighter with me, I purchased this lighter based upon the recommendation of other customers.
I received it a few days later. It was attractive and the movement was smooth as represented. However when I filled it with butane, it would only light a couple times before it required refilling.
Within a week, the movement began getting noticeably rougher. It felt like there was sand inside. I had 2 people look at the lighter and both agreed something was wrong with it.
Shortly thereafter the lighter jammed completely. I guess an internal spring came out of place.
For the first time in over 15 years of doing business with Amazon, I wanted to return a product. Amazon said I could not return it because it was purchased through Amazon Marketplace. Later I received an email saying I could return it if the package had not been opened … not very useful since I would not have known it was defective without opening the package

I’ve had this lighter for about 2 weeks now, and it’s a mixed bag.
The Good:
-When it actually ignites, the flame is strong and very, very hot.
-The cutter is decent and works great in a pinch or if you don’t smoke cigars often enough to warrant buying a standalone cutter. It’s nice to have one right with the torch.
-The fuel gauge behind the cutter is a nice touch as well.
-The flame height adjuster works well and allows for a decent range.
-The ignition slider works smoothly and is easy to pull down.
There are some issues I ran into with this lighter though.
First, it doesn’t light the first time every time. I’ve had to strike it more than 15 times before (at which point I usually give up) it will ignite. There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to why this happens, the amount of fuel left doesn’t seem to mean anything, nor does the flame height.
This thing goes through butane very quickly as well. I wouldn’t leave for a weekend without an refill around if you smoke often. It also seems to leak butane as well. I’ve filled it almost or completely full and left it for a day or two, and it was almost empty. Like another reviewer, i had a problem with the seal in the refill valve that allowed some of the butane to escape without ever making it into the lighter.
Also, occasionally the retractable top will not close on its own, but it’s been a rare occurrence for me.
It works well enough for me to keep using it, but if I had tried it before I bought it, I probably would have looked elsewhere.

This lighter has a retractable top (cover) which opens when you turn it on. It doesn’t retract automatically. I have to close it manually.

I ordered the lighter because of the other reviews. A butane lighter is really just two valves, one to refill and one to discharge fuel for ignition and use. All the rest is design, decoration and marketing. All good things to be sure, but don’t effect operation. The one I received today has two leaky valves that, among other things, discharges butane after each ignition cycle. I put it through a series of test cycles to determine reasonable averages for:
the number of tries needed to achieve ignition – 12 (range: 1 – at least 25 (I gave up after 25))
and how long before it (never failed to) put itself out – 2 seconds (range: <1 to 7)
how long it leaked butane after the button was released – 3 seconds. (range: 1 – 5)
The refill valve did not seal on contact with the butane cylinder causing wasted fuel to discharge into the atmosphere. I have had many such tools and don’t remember a worse example of a refill valve.
Though described in “Returns” at Amazon as ineligible for return, AZ gave a full refund.
